It was a municipality in its own right until the 2015 local government reform, when it became an administrative unit of Sarandë Municipality, taking in the villages of Ksamil and Manastir. The 2023 census counted 2,731 residents.

The village is part of Butrint National Park, and the Ramsar information sheet for the Butrint wetlands lists the Ksamil peninsula among the areas the park covers. Just off the shore are the Islets of Ksamil, four rocky islets with a combined area of 8.9 hectares that can only be reached by boat; the two outer islets are joined by a narrow strip of sand. Seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica grow in the shallow water around them.

Ksamil is a well-used resort for both Albanian and foreign visitors, and its beaches and islets are the main attraction. The archaeological site of Butrint lies further south along the same road.
