Ali Pasha of Tepelena took it over around 1804, added gun batteries and rebuilt it in the early 19th century as a new part of Butrint's defences.

It served Ali Pasha as a secondary residence until 1820, and he held the area until its final abandonment. The surviving structure keeps three towers and thick defensive walls, and it looks out over the Straits of Corfu.
